Homemade Bone Broth Recipe

Whenever you have bones leftover from cooking, save them to make a rich, flavorful bone broth. I had a bone in my freezer leftover from a large porthouse steak my husband made for dinner and used it to create this incredible broth. You can use any bones you have leftover, whether you save chicken bones or even ask a nearby butcher for bones just to make stock. Keep them in the freezer until you’re ready to use, then come back to make this. Your soups will never taste better. 

Ingredients for Homemade Bone Broth

  • 2 large carrots
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 onion
  • 2 heads garlic
  • 1 leftover T-bone from a porterhouse steak, frozen, or any other bones you have (shoulder, oxtail, etc)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon whole peppercorns
  • 3-4 bay leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to Make Homemade Bone Broth

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Trim the celery and carrots, cut the onion in half, and cut the bottoms off the garlic.
  2. Place the bones in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. Cook for 15 minutes. This step removes the impurities from the bones! This isn't your broth yet. 
  3. Remove the bones from the pot and dry them off. Discard the water. Place the bones on the prepared baking sheet with the celery, carrots, garlic, and onions. Cover everything with olive oil. 
  4. Roast for 30 minutes until the bones are brown and the greens are mostly wilted. Add all of the veggies and bones into a large stock pot and cover with water.
    Add the peppercorns and bay leaves to the pot and set over high heat.
  5. Bring the water to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer. Cover the pot and cook for 4-6 hours. 
  6. Strain the vegetables and bone out of the pot carefully over a bowl large enough to hold all the broth.
  7. Season the broth to taste with salt and pepper. Save to use in soups, stews, or other cooking.
