If you’ve ever made homemade hummus, you know the magic of nutty, buttery tahini. I used to saytahini (ta-hee-nee), but my husband sayst’hina (ta-CHe-na) so now I do, too (listen to me say it on TikTok).
Store-bought tahini is just sesame paste, so you’re supposed to zhuzh it up and transform it into tahina. There are so many different ways to do this, and this recipe is the way we do it in our family. This delightful sauce is a staple in Middle Eastern cuisine, enjoyed on anything and everything, from grilled veggies and sandwiches to fresh falafel and salads.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup tahini (I use this kind)
- 1/2 cup cold water (plus more as needed)
- 3 lemons, juiced
- 3 garlic cloves, grated
- 1 teaspoon salt
Directions
Stir together tahini and water until it reaches the desired consistency. It’ll look like it’s separating, but keep stirring! The ideal consistency is smooth and pourable, but not too runny.
- Add the lemon juice, garlic, and salt and stir to combine.
- Taste and adjust the seasonings as desired. Enjoy!
Recipe Note
Tips
This recipe is super flexible, so feel free to add whatever spices and additions you love! More garlic, cumin, and parsley are all great additions.
