mini holiday toffee

The perfect bite of the salty sweet Christmas snack everyone loves, made smaller.

Mini Holiday Toffee Recipe

Whether you’ve had it with saltines or matzah, everyone knows this classic holiday snack. Often known as Christmas crack or holiday toffee, one day I was looking at the oyster crackers in my daughter’s lunchbox and inspiration struck: imagine using the small salty crackers instead of saltines for a delicious treat totally covered with chocolate? These are just as good without the chocolate (even better if you ask me), but I couldn’t resist adding it. Add a pinch of flaky sea salt and you have the perfect holiday treat!

Ingredients for Mini Holiday Toffee

  • 2 - 8 oz. boxes oyster crackers

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more for garnish

  • 2 cups dark chocolate chips

  • Sprinkles, to decorate

How to Make Mini Holiday Toffee

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Once it has melted fully, add the brown sugar and salt.

  3. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for 3-5 minutes until emulsified, stirring occasionally.

  4. While the mixture cooks, arrange the oyster crackers in a flat layer on a baking sheet.

  5. Once the brown sugar mixture is totally smooth, pour it over the oyster crackers. Stir with a spatula to make sure everything is covered.

  6. Bake for 5 minutes to cook the mixture and form toffee.

  7. Remove the pan from the oven and pour the crackers into a large bowl.

  8. Top with the chocolate chips and stir well to melt the chocolate.

  9. Pour the mixture back onto the sheet pan and top with sprinkles and flaky sea salt.

  10. Let cool for 1-2 hours to totally harden. Break into pieces to serve.
