Munchie Mix Recipe

Today is the most 420 that 4/20 will ever be (at least for the next 1,000 years)—it's 04/20/2024, a palindrome. To celebrate, let’s make a treat! This recipe uses the basic principle of matzo crack, by pouring a toffee over crunchy, salty crackers and then melting chocolate on top. It’s everything you could ever want in a munchie and more!

Ingredients for Munchie Mix

  • 1 stick unsalted butter

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

  • 3 cups crunchy, salty snacks—pretzels, cheez-its, tortilla chips, etc.

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

How to Make Munchie Mix

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Stir together the butter and sugar in a small saucepan and set over medium heat.

  3. While that melts, combine 3 cups of crunch—Cheez-Its, pretzels, ends of bags of chips, tortilla chips, truly whatever you have—in a large bowl.

  4. Whisk the sugar and butter as it cooks. Once it starts to boil, take it off the heat and stir in the vanilla and salt. As you whisk, it should start to foam a little—now, it’s becoming toffee.

  5. Pour the toffee over the crunch and mix together well so everything gets evenly coated.

  6. Transfer the crunch to the prepared pan in a flat layer. You can use the back of a measuring cup to flatten it more!

  7. Bake for 6-7 minutes to harden the toffee, then remove from the oven and cover with chocolate chips.

  8. Return the pan to the oven for about 30 seconds, just to warm the chocolate. Use an offset spatula or spoon to spread the chocolate evenly over the top.

  9. Top with sprinkles and flaky sea salt while the chocolate is still warm. Let cool completely, then break into small pieces and enjoy.
