How to Brown Butter

This is an easy tutorial on how to brown butter. By replacing regular butter with brown butter, you can use it as either melted or solid butter depending on the recipe.

Brown butter is one of those ingredients that sounds so impressive and hard to make, when in reality it couldn’t be easier! Once I discovered how to make it, a whole new world opened up. It really elevates a recipe and gives things a nutty/butterscotch flavor. One of my favorite things to use it in is cookies, but it works well with everything.

What You Will Need

To get started you will need a stick of unsalted butter, a medium pot and a whisk. Check out our Baked by Melissa Blog if you are looking for some of my favorite baking recipes. Brown Butter works great for cookie recipes and rice krispy treats! Whenever melted butter is necessary, browning the butter takes the recipe up a notch.

Steps on How to Brown the Butter:

  1. Place one stick of unsalted butter in a medium pot on medium heat.
  2. Let the butter melt down while continuously whisking.
  3. Once the butter melts, continue to whisk. The butter will foam up and then subside.
  4. Watch for the brown specks to begin forming at the bottom of the pot. It should have a nutty aroma.
  5. Once the brown specks are visible, remove from the heat. You can use this immediately if your recipe calls for melted butter, or pour into a heat safe container and let it solidify to use for later!
